COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH

Education has traditionally been approached as a passive experience — for students, anyway. The instructor speaks, the student listens, and is expected to learn. The problem is that learning is an active process. There are three major components of learning: comprehension, retention and application. Comprehension, in education, is when a professor teaches a concept in such a way that students understand it. While most courses do give students at least a basic understanding of the material, short-term understanding is not sufficient — especially for physicians.

To be successful in medicine, students must be able to retain or memorize what is covered in their courses. In many competing review programs, students are expected to “study” to retain the material, but are not given tools to enable them to do so.
